Dog Food Recipes

This is the regular breakfast for my dogs and I have discussed it with several veterinarians who all agreed it meets the nutritional needs of my dogs.  I shop at a nearby meat store where I purchase 40lbs of chicken leg quarters at market price which is usually under $20.  I take the box home, rinse it, remove the fat and separate the chicken into freezer bags, depending on size 3 - 4 legs per bag, I feed the fat to the wildlife in my area, a little each night for several nights, not enough food to create a nuisance presence of wildlife, but when fat is such a luxury for them, why toss it in the garbage?.

Into a large (7 qt.) crock pot I put a can of peas and carrots and cut green beans which I then pulverize with a fork or hand blender, a cup of long grain natural brown rice, 1/2 a cup of oatmeal (not instant) and 1/2 a cup of barley, 1/3rd of a bag of wide egg noodles and 3 - 4 leg quarters, fill with enough water to just cover the meat.  Allow it to cook overnight (approx. 6 hours on high).  The next morning I debone the chicken (very important to remove and discard all bones!) mix everything up and the crock pot goes into the refrigerator.  My dogs' breakfast is spooned into their bowls each morning, heated slightly in the microwave and served.  This quantity feeds my two large dogs breakfast for a week, at the end of the week, any remaining food is set out for the wildlife.  If this is too much food for you to go through in a week (the longest I recommend keeping it under refrigeration) then get yourself some "can or freeze jars" and freeze it, take it out to thaw the night before, breakfast is ready in the morning.

This is the regular dinner for my dogs.  I stock up when the supermarket has a sale on any large cuts of beef like an underblade roast.   Into a large (7 qt.) crock pot I put a can of peas and carrots and cut green beans which I then pulverize with a fork or hand blender, then the barley, oatmeal, long grain natural brown rice, 1/3rd of a bag of wide egg noodles, and the beef, sometimes I add small apple slices and/or a whole banana which I pulverize with the peas, carrots and green beans, then cover with enough water to just cover the meat.  Allow it to cook overnight (approx. 6 hours on high).  The next morning I cut or shred the beef finely and mix it into the stew and the crock pot goes into the refrigerator.  My dogs' dinner is spooned into their bowls each evening, heated slightly in the microwave and served.  This quantity feeds my two large dogs dinner for a week, at the end of the week, any remaining food is set out for the wildlife.  If this is too much food for you to go through in a week (the longest I recommend keeping it under refrigeration) then get yourself some "can or freeze jars" and freeze it, take it out to thaw in the morning, and it will be ready for dinner.

Would you want to only be permitted to eat one meal a day?  Anyone who has ever fought the battle of the bulge knows that spreading out food into several meals is much better physically and for your metabolism then gorging on a single meal.  The same applies to our pets.  The "experts" may say one meal a day is "natural" for pets because their ancestors, wolves, will make a single kill, gorge on it then not be able to make another kill for several days.  But dogs are not wolves anymore then we are apes, they have evolved with mankind as domestic animals and just as they can no longer endure the dramatic low temperatures of winters that wolves survive, they also should not be expected to eat like wolves.  My dogs are given two meals a day.
Re: Garlic - If you do a Goodsearch (see links) on garlic and dogs you will find much conflicting information on feeding dogs garlic.  Some sites will say small amounts are ok, some say even small amounts are bad for a dog and there is a common misconception that garlic will ward off fleas.  I prefer to err on the side of caution and suggest that garlic not be used in any quantity for feeding pets, better safe then sorry.
